Dadda, Dadda Cool

Dear Olive,

Last night we had a fun little family night out - drinking wine and mingling with friends and new people, while looking at cool photos at the opening of this exhibition and book launch. Tony Mott has photographed all the big names in Australian and international music - Mick Jagger, Nick Cave, Rod Stewart and .... your Dadda. It's true. I haven't told you about it before but back in the day, your Dadda was (in certain circles anyway) somewhat famous. When I first moved to Sydney, fresh out of high school as an impressionable young woman, studying at Uni and desperately into indie rock, I knew who your Dadda was. He was the drummer in Sidewinder and some friends and I were, ah, rather large fans (some larger than others, you know who you are Milli and Mel). I first met your Dadda one night in a pub in Newtown way back in about 1997 - big excitement for me, although your Dadda didn't remember, I obviously didn't make much of an impression as a drunk 20 year old. I got to know him a little bit around the traps but years later, we worked together on a TV series and - luckily for you - fell in love and the rest, as they say, is history. Check out this Tony Mott photo of Sidewinder (circa late 90's I suppose). Your Dadda was one seriously good lookin' fella! (That's him second from the right.) He still plays today. You and I even joined him on tour to Melbourne last New Years - you were only a wee 10 weeks old. But I'll save all that for another letter.

Oh right! I don't know how many times I saw Sidewinder at the ANU uni bar. Lucky Olive to have such a cool daddy.
