Back on the Airwaves

Dear Olive,

It's been a hard week for you and I. Firstly, I'm tired. Really, really, tired. You've just acquired all these new skills - which are amazing, but with this developmental leap has come a realisation of your limitations. Which has made you frustrated. And angry. And you yell. I feel as though I am being yelled at half the day. Want to read again the book I've just finished and put to one side - yell. Fingers stuck under toilet seat - yell. Can't get a pea to stay balanced on a spoon with a chunk of avocado - yell. Want to turn light switch on-off-on-off-on-off but can't reach - yell. Lots of things, it seems, make you yell and it has made me very weary.

Secondly, this week has been crap because my computer broke. Dead, gone, buried (am I quoting Tony Abbott?). What on earth did Mums do before the interweb? After I've gotten through putting the toys away, doing the washing up, laundering, hanging out and bringing in clothes and nappies and attending to other household duties ad nauseum, I can easily spend a good hour and a half on the interweb looking up, um, really important stuff. It's been a bit lonely to be off the airways this week.

But things are picking up. The good news is that I've been using my time to read. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close sits close to the top of my All Time Favourite Reads List and I've been reading the same authors fist book. It's great - everyone said his first wasn't as good and I'd agree - but the second novel is particularly superb so almost impossible to match. I've been absolutely loving my leisurely afternoon reading. So much more enjoyable to read in big, alert chunks than in short, blurry grabs before bed. The even better news is that Shane came home with a new laptop in his arms for me (big love Shane!) and our lovely friend Rachelle has lent me her very terrific camera (Shane needs ours at work - big love Rachelle!). We are back in business! Plus, today is Friday ... happy weekend to us, and everyone else.

The loneliness is what gets me. I sometimes feel like Shirley Valentine.

I'm dead-set glad you've got a new computer! New 'friends' are the bomb.
