New Books, Old Books

Dear Olive,

It's always exciting when goodies from an internet shopping session arrive. Today it was books. One for you - so lovely. Originally published in 1960, it's amazing to me how great books really are timeless. One for me - I borrowed this when you were first born and I decided I need to own it as a reference, it's incredible, life-changing and I know I'll look at it often. (I recommend it to every Mum out there.) I've also been re-reading a few old favourites lately. Loving this one just as much the second time around, truly superb.

Buddhism for Mothers is amazing, huh. I have my copy right next to me as I type. I love that it is written just for us Mamas, that it is not prescriptive and really insightful. I've read it cover to cover but often go back to little excerpts. There is one bit in the appendix 5 when the author is describing her husband watching their child eat carrots- he says 'it's so beautiful that it hurts'. That line kills me, so sweet and so true.

I'd totally forgotten I own that book! So helpful with first child - must go find it!! Thanks for the reminder. I've attempted Cloud Street three times. I know, I know! How unorstrylian of me. I suppose I'll have to go for the fourth now...

I have buddhism for mothers as an audiobook and put it on while I do the housework. Works a treat at chasing those "why am I the only one who cleans around here" grumps away! & Tim Winton can take a while to get into I reckon - I recently finished Breath and thought I didn't like it at the time - but now a few weeks later I have decided I did. Love that ABC book too but will try and resist any more book buys this week- we are starting to get over run with kids books at our place. Have you seen "click clack moo - cows that type" - its our latest and is totally hilarious. Emma

Kellie, thanks for recommending this Buddhism for mothers. It sounds exactly like what I need to read at the moment. Will try to get it before Xmas so that I can read it during the holidays. xx
