Garlic Ear

Tuesday, July 9, 2013

Dear Olive,
A few nights ago, you woke up crying that your ear hurt. We've been very lucky with your ears - I think you had an ear infection when you were around 8 months old that resolved itself in a day or two, and this was the first we'd heard from your ears since then.
By the light of the stove, I crushed a couple of cloves of garlic into a cup and whizzed it around with a little bit of olive oil. I squeezed out the oil from the pulp onto a spoon, warmed it up with a match underneath, and - to much protest - droppered it into your offending ear. You had a pretty unsettled night (we all did). But in the morning, you seemed fine. Although we gave your ear some more garlic oil, just to be sure. Not another word has been spoken about the ear since then. And I hope that's the last we hear of it for a long time.

Oh, ear pain is the worst! Everly had sore ears once or twice as a bub but we haven't had any complaints since. Garlic oil is amazing for clearing it up! I hope Olive is feeling better. x

So wonderful! I didn't know you could use garlic oil to do that! I'll remember this for further reference. My two year old hasn't had an ear infection yet and I hope it stays that way! :)

That is amazing! I'll have to mark that down as just another reason to love garlic (my husband even has a bulb of garlic tattooed on his chest).

this is not the first time i have heard of this remedy - so glad it worked for you! as a nurse i hate the idea of jumping right to antibiotics (so many side effects, so much resistance... ugghh). luckily we haven't had any ear infections around here yet - knock on wood.

My boy just started antibiotics yesterday for a menancing looking ear. Will have to try this next time!

I had an ear infection recently, and went straight to antibiotics...I was on two different courses for two weeks, and was still in excruciating pain. Later, I found out about garlic oil. Last week, the infection started again, and I tried garlic oil, but I also tried (and this is going to sound totally gross, but if you look it up, there is a fair bit of supportive material about it) pee! (My own!) and one or the other but my ear infection cleared immediately.
Glad you knocked it on the head for Olive. x

Making a mental note on how to treat future sore ears!!

Lovely to see you link up! It sent me a little bit down memory lane to years ago and a poorly baby Olive linked up on Grateful. Or maybe it was FYBF?? Anyway, a reminder how far back these community link ups go. x

Leni had an ear infection this week as well. I've been treating it with breast milk. Seems to be working.
I will try the garlic if it flares up again.
Xx
