The Big Emergency

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

Dear Olive,

Well we got through another milestone last night. Our first trip to Emergency. It sounds silly in the cold light of day, but last night your Dadda and I got scared and we panicked. You woke up at about 10, clearly in pain. We weren't too worried - teething perhaps, the usual explanation. Seemed plausible. Until I remembered. That afternoon in the park. When I found you chowing down like nobodys business ... on a cigarette butt. Gross, I thought at the time as I tossed it away. But in the middle of the night, when I anxiously mentioned it to your Dadda, it seemed highly probable you were having some kind of toxic, deadly reaction to the chemicals you'd sucked down off that butt and we needed to get you to hospital quick smart before your whole system went into melt down. Of course, we should have known when we got you outside to the car and you completely perked up. You were loving it. The lights, the novelty. She seems ok, should we turn back? No! Onwards we pushed. The Emergency Department was packed out. And if we weren't infected with something going in, we're very possibly infected with something coming out - swine flu, scarlett fever, vomiting bugs, chest infections to name just a few of the ailments going around that room last night. Anyway, after the triage nurse checked you and said there seemed to be nothing wrong and felt sure the screaming and cigarette butt were unrelated, we decided not to stay on to see a doctor, instead returning to the fold so we could all get some sleep. It was 1 in the morning by this stage. And although your Dadda and I both do feel a little silly for panicking (perhaps a simple call to a kids medical helpline next time would be the smarter, preferable first choice), it's always better to be safe than sorry, right?

Who me, causing all this fuss? Why, I'm just eating a banana.
