Being a Wholefood Mama

Thursday, June 13, 2013

Dear Olive,
Anyone who reads this blog would know that natural health and nutrition are particular passions of mine. After being a Mum, it's probably the thing that defines me the most as a person. So you can imagine how honoured I felt to be asked to take part in Nikki's Wholefood Mama Series. You can read my interview here, where I talk about my philosophy on food and how we eat it, and that moment in time when my parents started giving us sugar free carob instead of chocolate (worst Easter ever!). Although isn't it funny how life comes in circles ... sugar free carob is now something I give to you as a treat. I really believe that even though there'll be times when you you deviate from the path, you'll always come back to the way you were raised. Which is why it's been so important to me to start you on the healthy eating way of life from birth, I'm hoping to make it second nature for you. My Mum taught me to never stop learning about natural health and nutrition, and I hope that's something you'll learn from me, too.
Thanks for letting me take part, Nikki.

I agree Kellie that even if and when Olive deviates from the wholefood path I think intuitively, instinctively she will return because of the solid foundation you are laying for her just as your parents did for you. Thrilled that you could find the time to answer my questions and be part of the series. xx

Just read your interview. Very encouraging and totally agree with everything. Im so glad i found your blog, for more inspiration. I try to be a whole foods mum too. My son is only 9 months but have definatly gone down a different path to what was recommended or suggested as I didnt want him exposed to cheap food. I try to buy only organic or atleast local. Luckily for us we have a good free range chemical free burcher near us, great organic fruit and veg shops and I can get raw milk which makes me the happiest. I grew up on a farm eating raw milk, fresh eggs, homemade everything, but for the last 12 years lived on notmal food. Since marrying though, our house has no processed food, and since little Percy came along, my passion for health for him and our little family has gotten stronger! Thanks for being a place I can share this! Hope you dont mind!

It was so wonderful to read your story Kellie, and I never knew your Mum was so into nutrition! How amazing to have such a strong foundation from childhood. I feel heavy sometimes with the responsibility of caring for my family the way I do, as I was brought up quite differently to how I parent (not so much with food, but definitely with health). But then I read this and know that I am doing a great job, and that although it may always be an effort for me, it will hopefully be second nature to Everly. Olive is so lucky to have you as her Mama! x

Oh, and we give sugar free carob to Everly as a treat, too! Our favourite brand is The Carob Kitchen, which happens to be made right here in SA. It's delicious and comes in cute little individually wrapped bears for kids. http://www.thecarobkitchen.com.au/site/CAR_movie.html
